Environmental contaminants such as drug residues occur in increasing amounts in waste water. Pharmaceutical waste water streams are, however, difficult to treat with conventional physical/chemical and biological treatment systems. Despite treatment, some chemicals biodegrade only partially and some even persist (EPPP, environmental persistent pharmaceutical pollutants). They may bioaccumulate, cause toxicity in the environment and enter humans via drinking water or the food chain.

To respond to the challenge, CleanX has developed a novel method which effectively reduces the emergence of different drug residues and antibiotic resistance among microbiota in waste water plants and prevents the detrimental effects of drug residues on the ecosystem and the expansion of antibiotic resistant bacteria into the environment.
